Here's a couple of my posters for the "Happy Hour" show I'm having at 1975 in Ra Cha Cha this fall. Concentrating on making things in the style of show fliers and cocktail/alcohol themed pieces. I'm really excited to see everything coming together! Also, speaking of Rochester, I went to the grand opening of the Northborough Wegmans today and it was insane. I think I bought some groceries, but really can't be sure.

I'm so happy and honored to be the first solo show at 1975/Surface Salon's new space in November! Even though I've lived in Boston for the past 6+ years, I always love going back home to visit Rochester and in November I'll be bringing a boatload of new art with me! This group of work is inspired by my love of going to shows, the perfectly mixed cocktail, and my graphic design heroes. Big thank yous to Erich for being such a awesome person to work with and to my friends and family for fielding endless art related opinion questions. You're the tops! Irony alert: in Boston and Cambridge, having "happy hour" or drink specials in a bar or restaurant is ILLEGAL. Thank you very little, pilgrims.

Thanks again to everyone who came by Barlow's last night for the Bombay Sapphire live painting! I had a great time and am adding the finishing touches on my piece today. My painting will be on view at Barlow's once it's done and there's going to be a show of all of the Boston artists who participated in the live painting events at the Mills Gallery from Sept. 17th-Oct. 2nd. Betty Crocker Recipe Cards

I spent a couple of days last week on the Cape with my parents. Did I kayak? I did. Did I lounge about? Yes. My mom and I also went to some pretty sweet thrift shops and I found a full set of the Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library. If you think you can live a happy life without access to this set let me ask you this: what do you do when you need to pack a lunch for your "Happy Traveler Sing-a-long"? I bet it wouldn't occur to you to put a bunch of donuts and munchkins in a wicker basket for the trip. Or maybe you're wondering what men like to eat-do you have a handy section in your other cookbooks called "Men's Favorites"? I bet you don't. It also probably wouldn't occur to you to serve fishsticks for breakfast. Just saying.

A doodle of my favorite summertime cocktail. And a recipe!

Fill a Collins glass with ice. Or a pint glass. Or a mug, whatever, I'm not here to judge.
Mix 1 part Pimms Cup No. 1 with 2 parts lemonade.
Stir it up.
Top off with club soda, or use lemon-lime soda if you want it to be sweeter.
Stir.
Garnish with a slice of cucumber, mint, and lemon wedge if you're extra fancy.

Also:

If you don't have lemonade, use Sprite or 7-Up. (I also read a version where someone used Fresca.)
If you use ginger ale, throw in extra lemons.
Apple slices, oranges and strawberries can be added.

John Burkett was nice enough to ask me to come in to AIB to be a visiting artist in his Opaque Media class. I showed some of my work and did a demo on some of my favorite gouache techniques and made this little Valentines painting. Thanks to John and all of his students for being such awesome hosts!

Yesterday when I got home my Stickermule order was waiting for me! Yay! These are the first die cut custom stickers I've had made and I love 'em. They do all kinds of custom sticky stuff, ipad, iphone skins, you name it. Check out their site for more info.

Robot G.U.T.S. 3

I went up to Monserrat this week to paint with Fish McGill and a bunch of other cool people as part of Fishs' Robot G.U.T.S. 3 installation at the 301 Gallery. The project was a collaboration between Fish, Boston area artists and Monserrat students ending with all of the art being auctioned off (for free!) I couldn't go to the closing party or raffle last night but I'm sure it was awesome. And I'm sure you already knew about it because you follow Fishs' blog. Do it! I got to eat a burrito the size of my head. I met cool people like Lizzie Siegel and a a super nice Monserrat student there who shared his Polaroid printer thing with us. It was awesome. Many thanks to Jamie and Ryan for giving me a ride to the Bev and to Fish and Sheryl for taking such awesome photos.

Happy Thanksgiving! Yesterday Fish and I painted at Karmaloop AND IT WAS THE BEST TIME EVER. It was a really nice day and when we were done we ate veggie chili served by a surly woman we dubbed "Babs". My piece was about girls and skulls and Fish made robots! Here's a sneak peek at a project I've been working on! Also, I wonder what fun things I'll do this summer? Oh wait. It's Thanksgiving. The end of summer/beginning of Fall flew by and the next couple of weeks are going to be just as busy.
Let's make a list shall we?

1. Tonight is the last night of Space242's Halloween Show! If you still want to check it out gallery hours are 6-8 pm.

2. 1975's Anniversary Show closes tonight too! If you're in the ROC check that out tonight. You can also read an article about my friend Erich who runs 1975 and is an all around awesome person here.

3. Tomorrow I'm heading to NYC to check out Pictoplasma. This year, it's only one day but it's FREE. I went two years ago and it was mind bogglingly good. Really excited to see Nathan Jurevicius' talk.

4. My friend Brian is putting together a show at Lorem Ipsum Books for the first week of December if you're interested in submitting work the deadline is this Monday the 15th. More info here.

5. Man Or Astroman? is playing the Middle East Down this Sunday. OMFG.

6. I'm going to California soon for my bestest friends wedding. One time in high school she gave me a pair of overalls that were made out of hemp and my mom took them away because they had pot leaves on the buttons. She also had all of her Beastie Boys posters mounted to foam core so they would stay pristine and we could properly worship them. Awesome. She also has a blog now where she talks about cooking and traveling and stuff. The header image is from when we went to Amsterdam together the first time and had mint tea. Oh yeah, and one time we drove around LA listening to "It's Not Unusual" really loud and it was the most fun ever. Alex is the best.

I'm in two Halloween themed shows that are fast approachin'. The first one is 1975's 2nd Anniversary Show-"Cinemonstrum". It opens this Friday, Oct. 1st. If you're in Rochester go support a great gallery and many fantastic people. The second is a group show at the newly re-opened Space 242 in Boston-I'm showing with another super cool group of artists and if you haven't already been to a 242 opening this is a perfect opportunity. It's not freezing yet and it's a Halloween costume party! BOOM. Come out this Thursday to the Fourth Wall Project to drink some 'gansett and help puppies. And bike messengers. Here's my in progress shot of my contribution. I got a lot more done last night after I took a break and watched some of the VMA's a.k.a. "That Awards Show Featuring Songs You've Heard in Spin Class". I liked the part where they had tiny children dance on stage with Justin Bieber to make him seem less tiny and childlike. Or the fact that the whole thing looked like it was being filmed in a space ship. That was on fire.

Charles LeDray at the ICA

Last night some friends and I checked out the Charles LeDray show at the ICA and it was the craziest and coolest thing ever. If you were ever into collecting minitures as a kid (aka if you are female) it is particularly mind blowing although anybody will be impressed by LeDray's talent. There are literally thousands of tiny handmade pieces of clothing and accessories and every detail is spot on. Out of the entire show there are only three found objects, which means when you're looking at the painstakingly recreated clothing stores LeDray made everything from the dust covered drop ceiling to the rows and rows of pint sized hangers.

Experimented with a new combo of digital and traditional for this test-going to make it into a finished piece. WITH SOMETHING IN THE WATER. And the water won't be a photo. Also, this is the coolest thing I got from Quimby's this past weekend in Chicago. Batforum. Prepare to pee your pants. Unless you don't think the idea of bats talking about art is funny. I also saw Fantastic Mr. Fox. I hadn't cause I was all "whatever. how good can it be?" The answer is really "cussing" good.

R.F. O'Sullivan's has amazing burgers, it's true. But their best kept secret was their veggie burgers. They were handmade and they were amazing. And then one day they were gone. I just wish I knew what I did to push them away, you know? I imagine bumping into them on the street and practice what I would say. In the end I'd probably just play it cool, even though they were the only veggie burgers I ever truly loved.

Sometimes the free table at work has really amazing things. Like the copy of Sundown I found on VHS. Or Dustin Diamond's memoir "Behind the Bell". My friend found this beat up copy of Beverly Cleary's "Sister of the Bride" and though it smells not unlike death, I really like the illustrations by Beth and Joe Krush. Also, breaking news-it stopped raining.

Anyone who gets the Piebald reference gets 200 nerd points. After taking a break to go to the ROC to see my family I'm making things again. This is a gocco print I finished up this morning. As I've rediscovered gocco I've also rediscovered how flipping expensive art supplies are which is unfortunate as my New Year's resolution is to never spend money again.
