Hello ellO

Thanks to everyone who came out to The Cute Show at ellO last night! Byrdy and co. did an awesome job and the show looked great. Plus they had mini cupcakes and Sparks, so really there was something for everyone. It was my first visit to Portsmouth and it was definitely worth the trip. I'm really happy I got to be part of the show and hope to work with ellO again in the future. There was a short write up about the show on Seacoastonline, and they featured my Sleeping Skunk painting! Table of accessories and stationary featuring work by me, Argyle Whale and other artists. Elise has an amazing norwal and unicorn print (not on this table) that I have to get.
Etched cards by Andrew DeVecchio.
The mini cupcakes.
Jamie Fales work. A Boston Terrier with Flavor-Flav esque gold chains? Check.
My Ouch-o-pus and some necklaces and button packs.
The one blurry picture I took was of my work on the wall. Rats. Yes, the skunk painting is crooked (don't worry it was fixed!).
Some more stationary. The beard card and pillows are from Sarah Coyne.
Squids!!!!!
Bradley Hoffer's work.

what I did today (and yesterday)

Painting away. . .I had more flowers on her and more leaves but it was teetering dangerously close to ukulele territory. Not that I have a problem with ukulele territory.

Bots to the rescue!

I freaked out at the grocery store when I saw these bottles. The characters are adorable and every flavor ends in "bot"-lemonbot, grapebot ect. I stared at them and made frantic hand gestures indicating my intense desire to buy them. We picked up berrybot and grapebot. I have yet to taste the actual water inside of the bottles, but I hope it's good since everything else about this company seems so charming. That's right, I said it. Charming.

Fons Schiedon is my hero

Trash-a-long. MTV Asia ident from Fons Schiedon on Vimeo.

Dutch artist and all around very impressive person Fons Schiedon was one of my favorite presenters from the 2008 Pictoplasma conference in NYC. His work is so good it hurts my brain. He can paint, he can draw, he can animate. He wore a white suit at the conference. My favorite piece he showed was an ident for MTV Asia that was a love song to both Karaoke and Kylie Minogue*, but this one is a close second. Go to his new site and be amazed.

*and if you know where to find said karaoke kylie ident and pass it on I, no, the world will be forever grateful.

My New Favorite Book

I found this language book from the 50's on the free table at work. Despite its groovy illustrations and promise to make ". . .learning seem more like amusement than hard work. . .", I don't feel like I'm learning any Italian. This is probably because I'm not really trying to learn Italian, I'm just trying to look busy on public transportation.

Posters and Fliers for My Show

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T

I happened to catch this gem the other night-The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. The sets are bizarre and beautiful which makes sense since it was co-written and directed by Dr. Seuss. If you were less than impressed with the most recent movie adaptations of Seuss' work, Dr. T will cure what ails ya. Har har. Watch a clip here.

Sidecars & Gingerbread

As part of our holiday festivities we mixed up some gingerbread cookies and sidecars last night. For sidecars make like this: three parts brandy, one part triple sec, one part sour mix with a sugared rim and a slice of orange or lemon. Crank up A Charlie Brown Christmas and then cancel all of your other plans.

Fruitbat Necklaces in the Shop!

My favorite of the necklaces I've been making-the fruitbat combination-is now available in the shop!

Mixtape Cellphone Charm Now Available in the Shop!

I'm adding lots of new things to my shop this week and my hand made mixtape cellphone charms are one of them. I made a lightbox yesterday and took tons of photos of my new stuff. But now I have the dreaded "computer eye" so I'm going to take a break and go get supplies so that I can have "Christmas tree decorating/cookie eating eye". I mean eyes.

Baby's First Bazaar Bizarre

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and the line to come out to the Bazaar on Sunday! Special thanks to my family, friends and JP-I couldn't have done this without their help and support. It was a crazy day and Jen and I saw some great work and met some really nice fellow crafters, artists and shoppers. My only regret is that I missed out on the pie. I'm smiling in this picture because the pie has yet to sellout. I'll also put up some more pictures on my flickr page and add the new merch to my shop. Here's a couple links to check out from fellow vendors. . .

Sniffles

Here's two shots of what's above my desk and on my desk while I finish up work for the show on Sunday. I've got a lot left to do and I have a head cold. I hope someone will be selling handcrafted DayQuil at the event. Actually, no I don't.

Wegmans + Graphic Design

Why I am obsessed with a grocery store? I've asked myself this many times, but as anyone from Rochester will tell you-Wegmans is the bomb. Check out how their logo has changed over the years.

In Other Radio Related News. . .

. . .I saw Wait Wait Don't Tell Me last night at the Wang and it was amazing and hilarious. Peter was charismatic as always and there were only two "wicked" jokes. Mo Rocca, Charlie Pierce and my favorite, Amy Dickinson held their own in a show that included discussion of gps underwear, giant pinatas, and James Bond. Plus, the guest for Not My Job was none other than Congressman Barney Frank. Tune in this Sunday to hear the show for yourself on your local NPR station or listen to the podcast.

The Casbah on KSYM 90.1

My new favorite podcast is The Casbah from KSYM 90.1 San Antonio. Brian reads your mind and plays a great mix of surf, garage, old school soul, random alt rock and other stuff. There's a set list on the site as well so you can find your favorites from the shows-old and new.

News and a new painting

Here's a peek at something I've been working on-trying to get back on the gouache train. September was a really busy month. . .a lot happened! The print lottery at AS220 was a big success. I went to the Pictoplasma conference in New York and saw amazing and inspiring work from Fons Schiedon, Tim Biskup, David OReilly and Tokyoplastic. I've got Sparkyart stickers on the way in addition to new button sets! Also, the big multiplayer game I was lead designer on for GBH is finally finished. You can play it here.

Ponytail Print

This five color screenprint is the latest thing I've made at the shop. . .it's printed on archival 11 x 14" paper and is an edition of fifty. The horseshoe is metallic silver. Yee-haw. It's going to be in the AS220 Print Lottery which you can read more about here.

Coconuts!

Dear blog readers (i.e. Mom and Dad),
Sorry I've been so lazy about posting lately. This summer has been crazy busy! Thankfully it's also been productive. . .how you ask? Well check it out. I painted eyeballs on coconut shells. And I hot glued bows on them. Owowowowow.

Coffin Couple Print

For my second set of silkscreens I did this creepy couple in their coffin. The original sketch is on the left. I'm pretty happy with how they came out and the glow in the dark ink works like a charm. The prints are now available in the shop!

Starry Eyed Print Now Available!

Hello hello! I am now a member of the AS220 Printshop in Providence! This print is from my first limited edition of screenprints that I've made there. It's an edition of 25 and each 9 x 12" print is numbered and signed. Head on over to my shop and pick one up! The printshop is great and I love the Taqueria Pacifica, over at the original AS220 building. Vegan veggie burritos 4-evah.

Earth Day

Today is Earth Day and if you're in Boston take a drive by WGBH in Brighton and check out the digital mural-today is all about The Greens, an original broadband series that I do character design and animation for. It's exciting to see something I worked on at such a large scale!

Goodbye Pretty Dunkies Sign. . .

The old school Dunkin Donuts sign at the intersection of Market and N. Beacon in Brighton was finally torn down last week. Boo.

Mike Mignola at the ICA

I went to the Mike Mignola talk the other night at the ICA, part of their ICA/AIGA series. Mike talked about his early influences including Frank Frazetta and Jack Kirby and showed a wide range of his Hellboy work-from early comics to concept work he's done for both films. Christopher Golden was there with Mike and the whole thing was like sitting in on a conversation between good friends as opposed to a formal lecture. Plus, Mike was wearing a Sof' Boy t-shirt. Awesome.

Inspiration from Amsterdam

I took a trip to Amsterdam earlier this year and thought I'd post some of the stuff I picked up there. These are some of the show fliers I collected.
