Hearts On Fire

There are lots of songs about love and fire. Falling into rings of it, hearts being engulfed in flames-this type of thing. It's so romantic! And terrifying! I sketched out this lovestruck alien girl and then finished the piece on the ol' compy.

Muerte

I've been doing some freehand embroidery and here's the latest one. When it's done I might branch out and make a blue skull. Who knows!!!???

Harriet, Sweet Harriet

I really, really hope you heard the episode of This American Life a couple of weeks ago that featured the story about Harriet the hedgehog. If you didn't you can listen to it here. Prepare to be filled with a warm fuzzy feeling towards hedgehogs, if you don't already harbor such feelings. Here's my version of Harriet with her meds.

Stroopwaffles!

I ate many, many delicious sweets on my vacation. The chocolate almond croissant I had from this place was probably one of the best things I've eaten in my entire life. However, my favorite treat remains the Stroopwaffel. Yes, you can get them at Trader Joes. But are they the giant ones that you can cover your cup of tea with? No, they are not. I made this little comic illustrating the proper consumption of these dutch cookies to accompany a tin of them that I gave to some friends. Yum yum.

Adventures in Wonderland

The thing about vacation is that sometimes when you get home you feel like it never happened. I had such a great time on my trip and am sad that it's over. However, I am not sad that I no longer have to rely on my 7th grade level french to order a sandwich. Thank you, people of Europe, for letting me partake in the magic of macaroons, intricate iron gates, fresh french bread, and cathedrals and cafes. I'm inspired. "Well done, you."

I've posted the first batch of photos from Amsterdam and Brussels on my flickr page. More to come soon!

I'm outta herrrrre...

This Monday I'm going on an adventure with my BFF from high school. We mostly plan on eating chocolate and drinking beer but I'm sure I'll see some old historical stuff too, natch. First stop Amsterdam, next Brussels, then Paris and last stop London. Later, dude.

Day of the Dead Skull Patch

I felt like death warmed up for the last week. It was unpleasant! But it did give me some time to finish up this day 'o the dead inspired skull patch I've been working on.

Cape Cod II

I had a great time with my family on the Cape this past summer. I especially liked all of the minigolf places and restaurants that we saw while driving around looking for a t shirt outlet or old timey ice cream parlour. In the interest of not having my parents have heart attacks or kill me I steeled myself from yelling out things like "OHMYGODPULLOVERSOICANTAKEAPICTUREOFTHAT" while we were in the car together. So I went back and experienced things like "The Pancakeman" all over again.
Everything was going well until Josh got mauled by Martin. That pretty much ruined the day.

L'il Halloween Paintings

Between the Fluff Fest and watching WHMS with Poot, Brian Connely and my brother I had a pretty great weekend. And I did these two wee halloween paintings! BOOM.

What the Fluff? 2009

The Fluff Fest was a success! There was a huge turnout and it was a perfect fall New England day. Thanks to Sarah for getting me involved and to Kristin for her expert guidance in the fine art of Fluff stage decoration. Thanks to everyone who came down to hang out. Thanks to the bikers at P.A.'s for not murdering us. You can see more pics on my flickr page.

Cape Cod 09

It was hard to get out of bed on time this morning after spending a week lounging around on the Cape with my family. We swam, we ate, and then we ate some more. We also went to The Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth which I recommend whether or not you are a superfan. The house is stuffed with artwork, books, and other memorabilia from his life-including his favorite outfit. There is also a big fat cat. Which is either great or terrifying depending on your specific feelings about cats. Other things of note were The Brewster Fish House, where my whole family literally freaked out because the food was so good, and Sundae School where my whole family freaked out because the ice cream was so good and they had an olde timey pianey plinking manically away the whole time we were there.

My ugly office chair-Now with less ugly!

I followed these instructions from the Design*Sponge DIY archives and fixed up my sad office chair. The fabric is from Ikea (As is the office chair itself. And that fabric behind it. And that cd holder behind it. Hmm.)

It's a Bikini World.

This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and would still tell people they have to watch. 1967's "It's a Bikini World" is so bad it's good, but in that way that challenges the definition of the word good. The guy who plays Captain Spaulding in House of 1000 Corpses owns a surf bar and sponsors skateboard races. If that doesn't make you want to watch it I don't know what will. Oh wait, yes I do-performances by The Animals, The Toys, The Gentrys and The Castaways.

Hot dog! We have a wiener!

4th of July weekend was a success. It didn't rain for the first time in weeks and I went to karaoke two nights in a row. I also made these picnic buddies. Yea summer!

New Cut Paper Painting!

What did I do on my vacation? I finally finished my latest cut paper/gouache painting. It's 15 x 22" and was inspired in part by Susan from Monsters Vs. Aliens.

Friendly Portsmouth

Some people like Portsmouth NH because it's charming and New Englandy. Other people like it 'cause cigarettes are cheap. It's got something for everyone! We went up to pick up some of my art from ello, which is sadly closing at the end of the month. Byrdy and co will still curate and organize shows, but the State St gallery will be no more. If you're in town, swing by this Friday night for their closing show. If you are hungry pop in the original Friendly Toast where I was almost killed by the "King Cakes".

King Cakes with vegetarian bacon. Gahhhhhhhhh. Eggs, hash and cayenne chedder toast (I think). And actual bacon.

Sita Sings the Blues

I'd seen bits and pieces of this and finally saw the whole movie last night in the theater. You can watch and read about it all over the web. Watch the movie on WNET's site, in HD on youtube or at a movie theater near you. Also check out the artist Nina Paley's SSTB site for more info.

Bump It Gocco Print

Here's my latest gocco print-my first four color design. Registering it took some experimenting, and it ain't perfect but it was good to get back to my lil PG-11, I've been ignoring it.

Viva Movement!

I did this design for my friend Chris at Movement, but it was never printed. . .until now! It was one of my favorite things that I did for him so I decided to get one printed through boardpusher. The colors are a little off but it's easy to upload designs, the prices are really reasonable and the turnaround was quick-yay boardpusher! Yay Movement!

Here's the sketch for the next gocco print I'm going to make-inspired in part by this hilarious hair product.

My New Favorite Show

Copyright © 2009 Discovery Communications, LLC.

Have you seen Time Warp on the Discovery channel yet? It's flipping awesome. Why you ask? Because on the show you get to see everyday things in super slow motion. The episode I saw was all about music and showed a lot of footage featuring Metallica. Also an upright bassist with a crazy mustache! You can watch clips on their site and on youtube but they don't look as good as the actual show.
Watch it Wednesdays at EP/PT 8pm.

China Fair

Whether you've been thinking of opening up a family restaurant or planning a party in which you are hoping to trick your guests into thinking it's still 1972, China Fair has something for you! Browsing the store at 2100 Mass Ave is like being at Pearl River, a garage sale and your parents basement ALL AT ONCE. They have kitchen supplies, tons of paper products and aisles and aisles of cups, plates and saucers. Did i buy the Ziggy napkins? Yes, yes I did.

If it's yellow. . .

I'm making a sign for our potty. Not to be strictly enforced, just an excuse to make something for above the toilet. I mean, everyone knows that picking something to go in that spot is a super important design decision.

I saw Monsters Vs. Aliens in 3D. And I liked it.

I recently partook in the madness that is Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D. I will go ahead and say that I'm not a big DreamWorks fan. If I never have to see anything relating to Shrek again I will be happy. I'm not charmed by the cast of Madagascar dancing around to "I Like to Move It". I know tons of people thought that MVA was a pile of poo with no plot or character development, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the look of the main characters and I bought Susan's storyline (however thin). I thought her transformation from wallflower to heroine was believeable and touching. I did! All of the main characters were well cast and there were some genuinely funny moments in the film. There were also some jokes that completely bombed, and I wish there had been more nods to classic sci-fi/monster movies but overall I thought it was pretty, pretty, pretty good. I'd also reccomend reading Jessica Winter's review in Slate.
