Sketch of the Day 20: Veggie Burger Breakup

R.F. O'Sullivan's has amazing burgers, it's true. But their best kept secret was their veggie burgers. They were handmade and they were amazing. And then one day they were gone. I just wish I knew what I did to push them away, you know? I imagine bumping into them on the street and practice what I would say. In the end I'd probably just play it cool, even though they were the only veggie burgers I ever truly loved.

Sister of the Bride

Sometimes the free table at work has really amazing things. Like the copy of Sundown I found on VHS. Or Dustin Diamond's memoir "Behind the Bell". My friend found this beat up copy of Beverly Cleary's "Sister of the Bride" and though it smells not unlike death, I really like the illustrations by Beth and Joe Krush. Also, breaking news-it stopped raining.

Experimental Jet Set

Once upon a time I said I was going to do a sketch everyday and post it on the interwebs. And now, I think I might actually do it. I've already set the bar really, really high with this meaningful piece I created just last night. It's about the human condition, obviously.

Bloody Nose

I spent most of the day at work looking at bloody noses, broken wrists and dislocated elbows and listening to podcasts about time, memory and quantum theory. Yaow. Here's a sketch that is ever so slightly related.

Love Hurts

I made this for my friend Jeff's zine Wet Cement. While not all of these things happened to me, they did happen. For the most part things that seemed horrifying at the time now seem hilarious. Unless you are one of my parents, in which case perhaps you won't get quite the kick out of this that I did. Happy Valentine's Day. Oh, and if you're looking for other gift ideas for that special someone and are fresh out of bath towels and knife handles, The Hater has some great flower suggestions.

Back in the saddle again

Anyone who gets the Piebald reference gets 200 nerd points. After taking a break to go to the ROC to see my family I'm making things again. This is a gocco print I finished up this morning. As I've rediscovered gocco I've also rediscovered how flipping expensive art supplies are which is unfortunate as my New Year's resolution is to never spend money again.

Hearts On Fire

There are lots of songs about love and fire. Falling into rings of it, hearts being engulfed in flames-this type of thing. It's so romantic! And terrifying! I sketched out this lovestruck alien girl and then finished the piece on the ol' compy.

I've been doing some freehand embroidery and here's the latest one. When it's done I might branch out and make a blue skull. Who knows!!!???

Harriet, Sweet Harriet

I really, really hope you heard the episode of This American Life a couple of weeks ago that featured the story about Harriet the hedgehog. If you didn't you can listen to it here. Prepare to be filled with a warm fuzzy feeling towards hedgehogs, if you don't already harbor such feelings. Here's my version of Harriet with her meds.

Stroopwaffles!

I ate many, many delicious sweets on my vacation. The chocolate almond croissant I had from this place was probably one of the best things I've eaten in my entire life. However, my favorite treat remains the Stroopwaffel. Yes, you can get them at Trader Joes. But are they the giant ones that you can cover your cup of tea with? No, they are not. I made this little comic illustrating the proper consumption of these dutch cookies to accompany a tin of them that I gave to some friends. Yum yum.

Adventures in Wonderland

The thing about vacation is that sometimes when you get home you feel like it never happened. I had such a great time on my trip and am sad that it's over. However, I am not sad that I no longer have to rely on my 7th grade level french to order a sandwich. Thank you, people of Europe, for letting me partake in the magic of macaroons, intricate iron gates, fresh french bread, and cathedrals and cafes. I'm inspired. "Well done, you."

This Monday I'm going on an adventure with my BFF from high school. We mostly plan on eating chocolate and drinking beer but I'm sure I'll see some old historical stuff too, natch. First stop Amsterdam, next Brussels, then Paris and last stop London. Later, dude.
